Jenna Cave


Jenna Cave is a composer, arranger and saxophonist based in Sydney. Her contemporary jazz compositions have been played by top Australian musicians at concerts and jazz festivals around Australia.

Jenna started learning the alto saxophone at age 11, and developed a passion for music when she discovered jazz at age 14 whilst playing in her school band. At age 16 she began pre-tertiary jazz studies at the Canberra School of Music with John Mackey, and soon after was playing professional gigs around Canberra. She commenced a Bachelor of
Music (jazz) in 2002 at the Australian National University School of Music.

Jenna began studying jazz arranging and composition with Miroslav Bukovsky in 2004. During 2004-2006 her compositions were performed by many ensembles at the ANU including small ensembles, the ANU recording ensemble, the ANU big band and the jazz vocal ensemble. In 2006 she co-produced her first album, "Take it in Colour" in collaboration with other jazz composers. Three of Jenna’s big band compositions were
featured on the LP.

Jenna graduated from the ANU in 2006 with a Bachelor of Music (jazz) with 1st Class Honours and was awarded both the Peter and Lena Karmel Prize and the Bernard Neumann Memorial Award for "The Most Outstanding Graduate from the ANU School of Music".

During 2007 she continued to compose and arrange for the ANU Big Band and also played in and arranged music for the Sally Greenaway Septet. In December 2007 Jenna conducted The Bennet’s Lane Big Band (Feat. Julien Wilson, Eugene Ball, Andrea Keller, Shannon Barnett) performing a set of her music at Melbourne International Women’s Jazz Festival.

In 2008 Jenna was granted a University of Sydney Postgraduate Award Scholarship to undertake a Master of Music (composition), under Bill Motzing at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. During 2008/2009 her music has been played by BLOW! big band (Feat. Andy Fiddes, Murray Jackson, Mark Ginsburg) and performed by the Sydney Conservatorium Big Band at Wangaratta and Manly jazz festivals, and at concerts at the
Sydney Conservatorium of Music. She has also performed on soprano and alto saxophones with various ensembles around Sydney. Jenna is currently arranging music on commission for the newly formed Sirens Big Band.
